6.5 Creedmoor Ammo Information

The 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo (6.5x48mm) centerfire rifle cartridge was introduced by Hornady in 2007 . The name was created by Hornady’s senior ballistics scientist Dave Emary and Dennis DeMille (Vice President of Product Development at Creedmoor Sports). This cartridge is a necked down modification of the .30 Thompson Center.

6.5MM Creedmoor is gaining popularity with hunters and flat gamers. Hornady says that the idea for 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo was first discussed at an elite shooting match. It was initially designed and manufactured according to shooting-match standards.

Its smooth performance in all conditions impressed hunters and target-hooters. The 6.5-inch cartridge size gives it the desired velocity. Additionally, the design reduces recoil and ensures accurate shots every time.

The performance of 6.5 Creedmoor ammo is impressive at 3,300 feet per sec. It also comes with 2,297 foot-pounds gunpowder for the smooth release of a 90-grain or 95-grain bullet. It can travel at 2,710 feet per second with 2,283 feet at 140 grain. In addition to shooting, 6.5 Creedmoor is also useful for hunting prey animals such as deer and pigs.

6.5 Creedmoor Ammo Design

Bullets of 6.5mm (.264″) are well-known for their high sectional density and ballistic coefficients. The 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition was made for long-range target shooting. It has a reasonable case volume (3.40ml) and bore area (34.66m2/0.3466cm2) ratio.

There is ample room for loading relatively-long, slender projectiles that provide good aerodynamic efficiency and external performance. The 6.5mm Creedmoor can replicate the muzzle velocity and trajectory of the .300 Winchester Magnum for some loads. However, it generates significantly less recoil due to its lighter projectile weight.

6.5 Creedmoor Cartridge Dimensions

6.5mm Creedmoor Ammo has a cartridge case capacity of 3.40 ml (52.5 grains H2O).

O lands = 6.50mm (0.256in), O grooves = 6.71mm (0.264in), land width = 2.29mm (0.090in). Primers can be either large rifles or small rifles depending on the cartridge manufacturer.

C.I.P. (Commission Internationale Permanente pour l’Epreuve des Armes a Feu Portatives) official guidelines state that 6.5 Creedmoor ammo can handle up to 435.00 MPa (63,091 psi) Pmax piezo pressure. In CIP-regulated are, every rifle cartridge combination must be tested at 125% of the maximum C.I.P. To certify that the rifle cartridge combo is fit for sale, pressure must be applied.

This cartridge has a SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure (MAP), of 62,000 psi (427.47MPa) piezo pressure.

6.5 Creedmoor Ammo Performance

The medium-power cartridge 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo can be used similarly to the .260 Remington or 6.5x47mm Lapua. The Independent reviewer lists the energy at 300 yards with 129-grain Hornady SST cartridges as 1,641 feet-pounds force (2.225 J).

An independent reviewer reported an MPBR for the 140-grain bullet at 2,700 ft/s (823 m/s initial velocities) and a retained energy of almost 1,600 ft-lbs (2169 J) at 300 yards (274m) using a 24-inch (610mm) barrel. SAAMI data confirms that 6.5 Creedmoor ammo can travel 15 feet (4.6m) from the muzzle at a velocity of 2,940 Ft/s (896 M/s for the 129-grain round) and 2,690 Ft/s (82 M/s for the 140-grain cartridge) at 300 yards (274 m).

This compares with .300 Winchester Magnum data which shows 2,930 Ft/s (893M/s for a 200-grain Bullet) and 2,665 812 m/s for 210-grain 210-grain 210-grain 210-grain m/s (which is/s for m/s for 210-grain ammunition bullet) and 2,665 m/s (ors) respectively) and 2,690 m/s (both of 2,690 m/s for 2,3 and 2,730 ft/s for 2,930 m/s of 2,93 m/s), both of the SAAMI From factory ammunition, 6.5mm Creedmoor can achieve angle accuracy of less than a half-minute.

The cartridge is supersonic and retains its accuracy past 1,200 yds (1.097 m), while a .308 Winchester equipped with match bullets of 168-grain has a supersonic range around 975 yds (892m).

Semiautomatic sniper rifles with 20-inch barrels and 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition can engage military targets from 1100m to point blank.
