The 300 Blackout Ammo (designated as 300 BLK by the SAAMI and 300 AAC Blackout by the C.I.P.) is intermediate ammunition developed in the United States by Advanced Armament Corporation (A.A.C.) to be used with the M4 carbine. It provides better performance with shorter barrels and powerful subsonic sound for suppressors compared with 5.56mm NATO. This 300 Blackout Ammo utilizes standard 5.56mm NATO magazines and components except for the barrel.

Design of 300 Blackout Ammo

300 Blackout Ammo was designed to produce energy comparable to that of the 7.62x39mm Soviet in an AR-15 with conventional AR magazines to their maximum capacity. It’s 7.62 Soviet tapering of the cartridge stopped efficient feeding into AR magazines and caused damage to the bolt. The M855 5.56x45mm round is derived from the 14.5 in (370 millimeters) barrels of M4’s carbine; this M855 5.56x45mm round can achieve an area of 500 meters.

24 in (610 mm) barrel 300 AAC Blackout, 78 gr Lehigh Defense CQ 2,960 ft/s (900 m/s) 1,517 ft⋅lbf (2,057 J)
20 in (510 mm) barrel 300 Blackout Ammo, 90 gr Barnes OTFB 2,630 ft/s (800 m/s) 1,382 ft⋅lbf (1,874 J)
24 in (610 mm) barrel 300 AAC Blackout, 90 gr Barnes OTFB 2,710 ft/s (830 m/s) 1,468 ft⋅lbf (1,990 J)

The 300 AAC Blackout bullet has significant drift, drop, and energy loss over that distance. With a 16-inch (410 millimeters) barrel with 125 grams (8.1 kg), a .300 BLK bullet has a lower speed and similar drift and drop at smaller distances. It has, however, the same amount of power at 700 meters as the M855 is at 500 meters.

For hit probability, the 300 Blackout Ammo has an effective range of approximately 460 meters. With a 9-inch (230 millimeters) barrel, the BLK round weighs 125 grams. BLK round is the same muzzle force that the M855 round from the M4, but 5 percent more power at 440 meters.

Comparatively to 7.62x39mm rounds, .300 BLK rounds with varied loads have better ballistic coefficients and are more potent from barrels of the same length. 300 AAC Blackout rounds, like Barnes TAC 110 grain, and Barnes TAC 110 grain, feature “barrier blind” performance, penetrating many inches of various challenging targets.

300 BLK enables a shooter to own a firearm with the capability to switch between supersonic, subsonic, or even barrier penetrating ammunition through the simple change of the magazine. It can replace the H&K MP5 in close-quarters combat, and by changing the magazine, it can take the fight to greater distances and outperform the carbine M4.

It is believed that the .30 caliber cartridge offers the benefit of an 89.1 percent increase in frontal size over 5.56x45mm, which has a more significant wound area for soft targets. It also penetrates more deeply and starts to yaw faster. The 300 Blackout Ammo rounds work from barrels as small as 4.5 in (110 millimeters). When suppressed, the round chambered weapons can be small, light, and quiet. Submachine guns, such as those with 9x19mm MP5, 5.7x28mm FN P90, and 4.6x30mm MP7, deliver more power and precision over long distances.
